Recently, our Grade 7 students took a dive into the vibrant world of street art, graffiti, stencil art, and of course, the enigmatic Banksy! We had some seriously deep discussions about art – the market, valuation, what qualifies as art, and what doesn't. After our art-philosophy session, these young creatives rolled up their sleeves and designed their very own stencils.
We had a blast experimenting with two different techniques. First, we made impressions with simple sponges, and then we unleashed the power of spray paint on the walls. It was a project that sparked tons of excitement and creativity. From Coca-Cola cans to fierce wolves and elegantly beautiful floral patterns, our students' imaginations knew no bounds. I wish I could've snapped more photos, but this project had us all on our toes! The artwork you see here is crafted by Jingmae, who goes by the name "Wolf." Her journey is quite remarkable. She joined us in Grade 5 without any prior art experience, and her confidence was a bit shaky at first. But fast forward to today, after a full year of dedication, I am proud to say that she has truly grown into a remarkable artist.

After Winter break we finally finished our Lino prints!! It is one of my favorite printing techniques and I think from today it's also some more people's favorite. Good fun! Shiraz wanted to do for the art show a project with foam and colours. After research, she came up with this idea so she was testing it on her playground time. Stay tuned for the final project. This time she printed it on a scrap piece of paper, the final one will be on a canvas! Printmaking unit 2 day 1. After the first printmaking unit where we carved some foam KD board, we made some collography, where we used recycled materials again to create these plates. On the second lesson, we will use Acrylic paint this time instead of ink and watered down. Stay tuned for the final result!
With Grade 4 we talked about the many different printing techniques there are, using wood, linocut, foam, stone, etc... This is one of the few techniques we are going to use in the classroom. We used some recycled KD board, foam, to make these radial printings. No we are going to work some Linocut, so many options when it comes to printing! We used as a carving tool just a pencil. You can use oil based paint or acrylic. The oil based one works great but it is quite messy and smelly. it is a bit hard to get it off your hands and forget about your clothes. First lesson they design and carve. Second lesson was the proper printing action
We try as much as we can to use recycled materials for our art projects. This time we used some used KD board to make our prints.
We were so lucky to receive the visit of a mimeograph artist. For those who doesn´t know what is mimeograph, it is a printing art. We first got to listen to the very interesting history of the art of mimeograph. Then we had a live demonstration, it was pretty impressive! After we made our very own designs and after that we passed directly to the action.
Fourth graders learned about rotational simmetry. They made their own designed, so once it was done we passed to the action. A full table with ink and rolls was waiting for them. Each student made 4 printings. Intense lesson but great reward at the end.
