After discussing with the Learning Support Department, we concluded that it would be a good idea to get some noise-cancelling headphones for the classroom. I initially purchased two pairs with a specific student in mind, but after introducing the headphones to the students, they were an instant success. I explained their purpose and demonstrated how to use them, leading to five students volunteering to try them out right away. The result was excellent, with absolute focus!

Students in grades 6 and 7 selected their beloved artist and crafted a magnificent masterpiece. Can you take a guess at the chosen artist by the initial letter represented? The painting shown looks a lot like one of the artist's famous masterpieces.
Every year, we have students who, for various reasons, bid us farewell. This time around, it was Ben's turn to embark on a new adventure as his family relocated to a different country, right in the middle of the school year. While I always try my best to ensure they leave with a proper goodbye and their well-deserved art portfolios, sometimes it's not always possible. This year, unfortunately, was one of those times as Ben had to leave earlier than expected.
Before he set off on his new journey, Ben managed to leave a heartwarming surprise on my desk. It was an amazing drawing and a thoughtful note. Moments like these truly remind me of how fulfilling it is to do what I do. The connection we build with our students and the art they leave behind as a token of their time here is simply priceless. Paragraph. Haz clic aquí para editar. Exploring the vibrant world of Pop Art, we recently dived into the incredible legacy of the one and only Keith Haring! 🎨💫 After lively discussions about his life and iconic work, our creative sparks ignited. Using clay as our canvas, we embarked on an artistic adventure that has us grinning from ear to ear. Thanks to our trusty kiln, we're all set to unveil a masterpiece in the making. These clay tiles, once painted, are bound to be nothing short of spectacular! 🌈✨ Starting with sketches on paper, our students unleashed their inner artists and, armed with clay, brought their visions to life. The result? A breathtaking tapestry of creativity that's sure to leave a lasting impression. Stay tuned as we continue to infuse our Middle School artistry with the magic of inspiration! 🌟🖌️
Working in Middle School with new techniques and materials. After discussion about the art of sculpting and introducing a number of master in the art of sculpting we work on our very own piece.
Last week was international week and each one of us talked about our home countries. I am from Spain and I am so proud of the fine art, artists and rich art history we have. We had lessons about Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, and of course the one and only Antoni Gaudí. They all are very eclectic artists, so with Grade 7&8 we decided to get into deeper discussion with Gaudí and his magical landscapes. In one of those magical places, Parc Güell, you can find the iconic lizard. After discussing life and work of Gaudí, we got hands on work. Here's just a sneak peak. WIP
We are very excited as we recently bough a beautiful kiln where we can fire a significant amount of clay together. These awesome coins are the second batch we fired you can check them in the video below! 6th graders learned about the Great Seurat and Pointillism! June came up with a new art movement... Fingerism! (check the video below) Our Grade 4 students were studying the Ice Age, so we decided to transform the corridor into an Ice Cave. It's been also freezing lately, probably the coldest days we've had in 20 years here in Beijing, and feels like even inside the school.
So, here's what we did: we took some recycled paper from last year's Early Human cave project and got creative. We repainted those papers using acrylic paint and sponges to give them an icy, cave-like look. Now, our corridor looks like a cool ice cave, adding a unique touch to the school environment! It's as if we've stepped back into the Ice Age right here in our school corridors. We are using post-it notes to create this art work. The students first designed their work on a paper and then make it real! Can you guess what is coming?
Here you can see some of the projects we have done during this past wild times! We were working online for at least 6 months! Today was set up day in the school, first day (without students) first week of 2020-2021. I am really looking forward to see the students! In the meantime you can enjoy some of the work from last academic year.
After Winter break we finally finished our Lino prints!! It is one of my favorite printing techniques and I think from today it's also some more people's favorite. Good fun! I am pretty excited with this unit about Nomadics and Tuaregs. I was lucky enough to live in the Morocco desert for some time and get to know about Tuareg's lifestyle. On the first day, we talked about a whole lot of stuff about Tuaregs. It was exciting because students knew about them, they worked in their home classroom beforehand and some of them even made a presentation about them, so it was extra interesting because we had a pretty cool discussion. We watched two very short videos about Tuareg Music. The first one about traditional music and the second one was about more contemporary music (actually one of my favourite bands) Collaborative art project between students, teachers and admin for the 三十 anniversary of the school!. Theme: draw something that you love in our school!
I was asked to create a group project for a beautiful naked wall in the Middle School lunch room. So I involved G6, G7, teachers, Admin and IT Department. The result is this fantastic mural. It was really interesting to see how the adults were way more excited than the students. Most of them came back just to thanks. I am definetly involving more Adults in future projects.
Grade 6 and 7 have been studying Nomadics in their home classroom. Maasais is going to be just one of the units that we will do about Nomadics in Art. Here you can see our wonderful Massai's shields! I wish I could have filmed the process but when it comes to paper mache there is never enough free hands to film. Paper mache is always messy but very rewarding! Stay tuned for the decoration of the shields! Can't wait to hang them up! Listening to David Hockney himself talking about his life and work. Afterwards we got into a very nice & deep discussion about art, art auctions, art market... we even forgot about playground time!
Shiraz wanted to do for the art show a project with foam and colours. After research, she came up with this idea so she was testing it on her playground time. Stay tuned for the final project. This time she printed it on a scrap piece of paper, the final one will be on a canvas! Grades 5 and 6 just studied the wonderful world of Pop Art and everything that surrounds it, not only art. We only talked about two of the greatest pop artists, Andy Warhol of course and Roy Lichtenstein, one of my personal favorites.
Ava has been obsessed with Mandalas lately. She used to come almost every playground asking if she could draw some small Mandalas. One of those days I asked her if she wanted to make a proper one on a bigger size than the ones she usually made. She obviously was excited. I gave her a really nice quality paper, metallic markers and few more supplies. She ended up with this masterpiece. Before she started to work on it we talked for some time about the origins of Mandalas, who makes them, why they are made, etc.. after discussion I played this video for her. Also when she was working I found some Tibetan Buddhist chanting so she felt a bit more in the mood for the work. It was a great experience! Our Grades 5 & 6 have been working on a paper mache project. They first designed what they wanted to make on a KD board structure, assembled and then messiness started! We applied our paper mache secret formula on the structure with newspaper stripes (if anyone is interested in the secret formula, just pop by the art room, we will be very happy to share it with you) Next and last lesson was to paint it all. We got letters, numbers, shapes, logos even some book characters!
Portable homemade lightbox photography studio made by students, for students. Get ready, some high quality pictures coming!
Day 2.
They used any tool they found in the art room to paint their sculptures. Brushes, hands, sponges, stamps, toothbrushes... anything! Some of them decided to create beautiful textures with the paint itself, others just a flat layer, blend the paint, etc... Check all the pictures below and if you have any question about the whole artistic proccess, please leave a comment below in the comment box and I will reply to you as soon as possible. We have been talking about sculpture in class, inclding the different types, materials, techniques, etc... and we came up with this fun one.
Materials: 1 wooden block, 1 hanger, acrylic paint, and 1 sock. First of all, we drilled two little holes in the wooden block to insert the hanger (previously streched) Secondly, the hanger was attached to the wooden block. The students then shaped it and put the sock over the wire frame. Then, they put gloves on and it was time to get dirty! They then painted the whole sculpture with their hands, something that is always fun. After this lesson, we need to wait for the next one for them to design and apply the decorations, colours, etc... so stay tuned! |
