This is Quinlan's weekly assignment!
This cat is 3 years old. She is a Bad Kitty! She didn’t always have the ‘’ T “on her nose. She first had a normal nose, until one day there was a metal rod, she got burnt by it, and the tip of the metal rod was shaped like a ‘’ T “! So that’s how she got her nose shaped like a’’ T!” Collaborative art project between students, teachers and admin for the 三十 anniversary of the school!. Theme: draw something that you love in our school!
After discussing the color wheel, cool and warm colors, complementary colors, etc... we came up with these fantastic landscapes!
Last week I was researching something online and I popped onto this wonders! I saw them and I was like "we had to draw this fun corns". Then we did it and we talk about the colour wheel, primary, secondary, warm, cool colors, ...etc
Layla's interest fair project was about dragons! I had sooo many questions for her about dragons. So she came up with the idea of using some cardboard boxes for the structure of the head (We have loads of recycled materials in the art room, like loads! sometimes I ask to myself if I am keeping too many of them but when a student comes in and have to do a project and you show them proudly your recycled storage... then everything is much easier. Conclusion: It's never too much!)
So basically after assembling the boxes, we used paper mache technique, then acrylic, foil paper from kids lunch, etc... it was so much fun to work along her making this dragon real. We made a day time-lapse drawing with Colin. I have never seen anyone drawing like him, it is a big pleasure seeing him drawing. He explains to you every single detail of what he's doing, and believe me every single line has a reason in his drawings. He has an amazing passion for drawing (and for trains) so we came up with this idea. We set up this homemade studio for a day and just with the phone we recorded him in action. The shooting time is 54 mins.
Interest fair is coming soon! Lena is working on something quite cool... Can you guess what is about? Stay tuned!
Every other year we talk about Heather Galler and her wonderful world! Her work is full of patterns and beautiful colors. We talked about her and her work with our second graders and they came up with their vision of Heather's cats.
We talked with our Grade 2 about tints and shades and we ended up with this amazing views of different sharks and other sea creatures. We basically used, blue acrylic, white and black. Also some black paper to cut out the silhouettes (I love the hammer head sharks)
Once a year, our art classroom transforms into a pottery studio, complete with beautiful pottery wheels. For one exciting week, students from all grades get the chance to sit at these wheels and create their own pots. It's a time for them to explore the tactile pleasure of shaping clay, to learn the delicate balance of pressure and movement.
This pottery week is definitely one of the highlights of the year. The students eagerly anticipate it, buzzing with ideas about what they want to create. It's a fantastic opportunity for them to not only learn a new skill but also to express their creativity in a different medium. The pottery wheels bring a unique energy to the classroom, encouraging students to experiment, to play, and to learn from the inevitable mishaps that come with the art of pottery. As they work on their pots, students discover the patience and persistence required to create something beautiful from scratch. They learn the importance of attention to detail and the value of seeing a project through from start to finish. And at the end of the week, they have their own handcrafted pot to keep—a tangible reminder of their creativity and hard work. We also learn something very important, to dont get too attached to something, just because chances that some pots break during the drying or the firing process are very real. It's truly amazing to witness the students' growth and to see the pride in their eyes as they hold their finished pots. The pottery week is much more than just a break from the regular curriculum—it's a cherished tradition that nurtures the artistic spirit of our students. Our MSB students have been invited to a contest about how to save the environment. The contest is organized by LittleStar Magazine and will be by the end of October. We will keep you updated with more info coming soon, in the meantime enjoy some of the designs of our MSB artists. We have 46 students involved in the contest!!!
Grades 2 have been doing some clay master pieces. The result was brilliant. The only downside of this project is that it has to be finished in one lesson. It might take you a bit longer than the lesson because to put the sequins takes quite a bit of time. The effort will be rewarded.
Again the great Eric Carle. We made a painted paper lesson, it is such a fun technique, messy but fun. We first read the story, then we made the background paper and the polar bear paper. We used sponges, it is a very effective and fast technique and students love it so much. We limited the amount of colours to choose for the background to only 2.
Second day we trace the parts of the polar bear (stencils previously made) on the back side of the white painted paper, cut them and glue them to the background. Picture Alex holding his master piece We made a very simple but effective project with our second graders in the paper unit. Basically we just need 12 paper strips, the more colourful the better, glue stick and good paper folding skills. One of the most expected weeks of the year! All the grades have the chance to experience to work with clay in a clay wheel. Depending on the grade, the difficulty level is higher or lower. All the students from reception until Grade 6 get to work with the wheel. Clay time! We found the fantastic book the Pout-Pout Fish. We used 3 lessons, including one to introduce the clay. It is such an exciting fun time for them. Everybody loves clay. We usually have 2-3 clay lessons / year. One of them is one the most expected weeks of the year, the pottery wheel week!
Second graders are talking in their classroom about Africa and its life. We came up with this project, using glue for drawing and soft pastel for colouring.
