Every year, we have students who, for various reasons, bid us farewell. This time around, it was Ben's turn to embark on a new adventure as his family relocated to a different country, right in the middle of the school year. While I always try my best to ensure they leave with a proper goodbye and their well-deserved art portfolios, sometimes it's not always possible. This year, unfortunately, was one of those times as Ben had to leave earlier than expected.
Before he set off on his new journey, Ben managed to leave a heartwarming surprise on my desk. It was an amazing drawing and a thoughtful note. Moments like these truly remind me of how fulfilling it is to do what I do. The connection we build with our students and the art they leave behind as a token of their time here is simply priceless. Every year, we get to roll out the artistic red carpet for guest artists, and this time around, we hit the jackpot with not one, not two, but THREE amazing Tibetan artists! They graced our school with a fantastic Thangka workshop that left students, parents, and teachers beaming with joy.
Before we even picked up a paintbrush, we delved into the wonders of Tibet and the mesmerizing world of Thangka. This art form is so incredibly relaxing; It's been used for centuries in meditation, it really works like a charm. Everyone loved the experience – parents, teachers, and, of course, our talented students. We enjoyed it so much that we're already clearing space in our calendar for next year, eagerly anticipating their return. Grade 7s learned about Jasper Johns work on the last project of the year. Each student made one stencil with one number (Included one Pi number) and then they exchanged them to create their very own piece of art.
JASMINE:
Jaime, as you might have noticed, in each of the eight sections in my drawing, there is a label. There is fairy tales section, criminal history, Greek myths,Chinese WORD stories, American history, Roman history,Chinese myths and English stories. In each of these sections are two scenes or figures. They are tiny and black. You have to find them, and tell me what stories scenes or people they are. If you can’t guess it, or you did, let me know and I will send you the answers. I hope you have fun guessing them!!! ------- JAMIE: Hi Jasmine!! I really love your Zentangle! it looks gorgeous! ok, I think I found them in all sections except in the fairy tale! I haven't found any in that one... any clue? Thanks -------- JASMINE: There are two plants in the fairy tale section. Two humanoids, very tiny, are there. In the upper corner is a flower. In it is thumb girl from a fairy tale. In the down left corner is a leafy long plant, climbing up it is a tiny figure which is jack and the beanstalk. -------- JAMIE: I can see them and I love them! So as I told you I found most of the figures/scenes but I can't guess them all. In the English section, it seems there is a Santa Claus? In the Roman section there are some gladiators? but in the other sections, I can't tell much 🙁 I would love to hear more about this amazing drawing! ------- JASMINE: Yes, in the English section is Santa and the Tooth fairy. In the Roman section is emperor Commodus, who loves gladiators, and the two people standing on two hill tops are Romulus and his twin brother. In the criminal history is the robber couple, Bonnie and her husband, and Jack the Ripper, who I’m sure you’ve heard of. On the path he went there is a envelope, which is the letter he wrote to the police, and is now in the Scotland Yard Museum. In the American history is the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Boston Tea Party. In the Chinese word story, one is 买椟还珠 and 狼狈为奸, which you probably didn’t know. The Chinese myths are, as the English translation goes, Eight Immortals crossing the Ocean and Shen Nong tastes a hundred herbs. The fairy tales are, as I’ve said, are Jack and the Beanstalk and Thumb Girl. The Greek myths are Hades giving Persephone a pomegranate and Prometheus bound to the rocks. Was this game fun? I hope so!!!!! This is Quinlan's weekly assignment!
This cat is 3 years old. She is a Bad Kitty! She didn’t always have the ‘’ T “on her nose. She first had a normal nose, until one day there was a metal rod, she got burnt by it, and the tip of the metal rod was shaped like a ‘’ T “! So that’s how she got her nose shaped like a’’ T!” Talking about patterns with out Grades 3. We also learned about the art of Zentangle. After discussing about patterns and Zentangles we came up with this idea of drawing zentangles animals. Here you can see just few examples but we had almost any animal you can imagine!
Last week I was researching something online and I popped onto this wonders! I saw them and I was like "we had to draw this fun corns". Then we did it and we talk about the colour wheel, primary, secondary, warm, cool colors, ...etc
Every year we talk about selfprotrait and every year we give it a new spin. These are grade 4 and after lively discussion about proportions and watercolour technique we ended up making thse wonderful ones.
We made a day time-lapse drawing with Colin. I have never seen anyone drawing like him, it is a big pleasure seeing him drawing. He explains to you every single detail of what he's doing, and believe me every single line has a reason in his drawings. He has an amazing passion for drawing (and for trains) so we came up with this idea. We set up this homemade studio for a day and just with the phone we recorded him in action. The shooting time is 54 mins.
Romero Britto inspired all our sixth graders to create these wonderful art works. Romero combines elements of Cubism, Pop Art and Graffiti painting on his work. His lines are very bold and he likes to use very bright colours. We talked about his life and work and after discussion we made these master pieces.
Recently we studied about Still Life with our Grade 1. Every year students themselves design a different set up like fruits, vegetables, flowers, art suplies... After discussion about what is Still Life, origins, techniques, etc... they get create their own
4th graders made this outstanding carp. inspired by Japanese art and also the ones that appear in the art of tattoo. Everybody, children, teachers, viewers even myself... were really surprised with the final result, watercolour pencils are quite fun.
Ava has been obsessed with Mandalas lately. She used to come almost every playground asking if she could draw some small Mandalas. One of those days I asked her if she wanted to make a proper one on a bigger size than the ones she usually made. She obviously was excited. I gave her a really nice quality paper, metallic markers and few more supplies. She ended up with this masterpiece. Before she started to work on it we talked for some time about the origins of Mandalas, who makes them, why they are made, etc.. after discussion I played this video for her. Also when she was working I found some Tibetan Buddhist chanting so she felt a bit more in the mood for the work. It was a great experience! Grade 3 are studying Early Humans in their home classroom so we got into their lesson and we tried to recreate how Early Humans made their artwork. We used soft pastel on a brown paper that we scrunched it up beforehand so it got a very interesting texture. After the scrunching they gave it a very light layer of soft pastel so it looked and felt like a cave wall.
We were talking with our grades 3 about Op Art and how we can trick our eye. There are many different types of Op Art and Laura came up with this ingenious way
Grades 3 recently used watercolour pencils for the very first time. I personally love watercolour pencils you can create great things that if you try with paint might be a bit more difficult / messy. Space rockets never fail it's a subject that everyone loves, do you?
Our fantastic 3rd graders drew and designed these amazing pets. We learned about patterns, new vocabulary and also about composition. It is done basically with a double tip sharpie. It is a very addictive project, I had to literally pulled the paper away from them when time was over, they didn't want to stop!
Our MSB students have been invited to a contest about how to save the environment. The contest is organized by LittleStar Magazine and will be by the end of October. We will keep you updated with more info coming soon, in the meantime enjoy some of the designs of our MSB artists. We have 46 students involved in the contest!!!
Every grade make a selfportrait unit, using different medias such as oil crayons, watercolour pencil, colour pencil, pencils, watercolours... On grade 4 we first talk about Cubism and they do their own cubist selfportrait. Right after, we talk about real proportions and they make a proper selfportrait, in this case was using watercolour. I love how much some of them they look alike. We sometimes show it to other classrooms and they guess who is who like 95% of the times, fun.
Grades 5 and 6 saw the different perspectives that you can use when you draw. We used this one point perspective to create the illusion of looking up at the buildings. Sky was done with blue and white oil crayons.
