When I found out about Kimmy Cantrell I thought we must do something in the art room. He usually works with clay but we did it using cardboard instead. His use of asymmetry fascinated the children. His work reminded to them to Picasso and African art, so we discussed quite a bit about his work/life. To be honest I was really impressed of how deep those grades 3 got into discussion. Henri Matisse inspired all of our 3rd Graders to create a fantastic piece of art work. Matisse was a great painter during his entire life but when Henri was old he made cutout pictures. Since he was sick so often he had to spend lots of time in bed. It was easier to cut out pictures than use a paint brush! We used the same collage technique that he used; He liked to create images with organic shape cut-outs, just like we have done! Here you can see Henri's (not the Matisse one) creation. If you scan the QR code you will get a wonderful explanation of what is this piece of art about.
We all love Eric Carle and his wonderful world. This time was the turn of the book "Polar bear, polar bear, what do you hear?" It's such a fun book. We made few stencils so the students trace, cut and glu on previously painted papers. Here's Caroline in action!
Third graders had a messy but superfun paper mache lesson. We found this storybook that fits perfectly the idea we had in mind, a flying pig! Firtst thing was to make the body of the pig with newspaper, plastic bags and masking tape. After that, we found some cardboard and time for ears and wings, again masking tape.
Second lesson is the big day. The secret is to have everything perfectly organized so you don´t waste a second. Basically newspaper strips and paper mache paste. Third and last day. Painting day. The result was really impressive and the display of them was amazing. we hung them all up at the main lobby. One of the most expected weeks of the year! All the grades have the chance to experience to work with clay in a clay wheel. Depending on the grade, the difficulty level is higher or lower. All the students from reception until Grade 6 get to work with the wheel. Someone really special gave me this book a couple of years ago, “When Pigasso met Mootise” by Nina Laden. It is such a fun story and the perfect way to introduce Picasso and Matisse. We focused on Matisse this time. We talked about the artist and his life, we saw and discussed some of his artwork and we ended up making our very own Matisse.
